Chronicle of a Death Foretold
by Gabriel García Márquez
After reading it twice, I've come to really enjoy the story he crafted. Though the victim's morals are questionable (such as groping a young girl and being overall a womanizer), the story goes beyond that, bringing a piece of the past most of us aren't used to seeing (or in this case, reading). The importance given to virginity, purity, marriage, "bringing justice and honor" have become somewhat foreign nowadays. In the novella itself, the twins (Pedro and Pablo Vicario) are trying to avenge their sister Ángela honor by murdering the man who "stole her" before marriage. The core factor which truly settles the story as a tragedy is that neither brother seems too passionate about comitting the act, yet feel compelled by society's standarts to do so. The victim, Santiago Nasar, is left completely unaware of what's unravelling around him, no matter how many people try to warn him or how many believe he's already in the known. At the end, the death foretold unfolds as expected.
In a few words... I really liked it! García's Márquez works are incredibly good and they teach me a bunch of new vocabulary. If possible, do give it a read <*-*>
